Preschool Classrooms

The First School Steps Preschool uses the Creative Curriculum System for Preschool, a research based preschool curriculum. This curriculum also helps teachers develop appropriate small and large group activities to enhance growth in the classroom. Children are assessed three times each year utilizing Teaching Strategies GOLD, which includes on-going observations, samples of classroom work, and family input. For more information regarding the curriculum or assessment visit: http://teachingstrategies.com.

Our classrooms serve multi-aged children with many different ability levels. All children benefit from learning opportunities that we provide in an environment based on each child's unique qualities.

Screenings

The Lil' Longhorn Preschool program offers free screenings once a month for children between the ages of 2 years, 9 months, and 5 year olds that are not eligible for kindergarten. Children are screened for vision, hearing, cognitive (thinking skills), communication, social/emotional, motor skills, adaptive and self-help skills.

Children that receive a red light after screening are scheduled for further evaluation. Children who meet state criteria for eligibility and are at least 3 years old may be eligible for our Special Needs Preschool Program.

Evaluations

Comprehensive Developmental Assessments are conducted to determine Preschool eligibility, present levels of performance and to assist in placement decisions made by the Multidisciplinary EvaluationTeam.

  • School Psychologist
  • Speech-Language Pathologist
  • Occupational Therapist
